Alexandre NOLL (1890-1970)
Untitled Rare direct carving on ebony from Gabon Signed ANoll Circa 1960 H : 29 cm Bibliography : Olivier Jean-Elie and Pierre Passebon, " Alexandre Noll ", Ed. du Regard, Paris, 1999, for a similar model reproduced on page 90 Alexandre Noll roughs out the pieces with a saw, then he hollows them out, cuts them and refines them with a gouge. He uses sandpaper and a buffer to polish them. Alexandre Noll multiplies the effects by letting, here, the bark appear, by polishing, elsewhere, a surface. The form does not have a lesser part in his research. The unusual rhythms, the unforeseen, surprising harmonies that he likes in the uneven cuts of wood with knots, wounds or a particular wood grain. The shapes of the objects he makes, most often asymmetrical, irregular in their thickness and surface, do not imitate nature but rather suggest it, they summarize it, they synthesize it. "I do not kill wood, I obey it. Following meekly its contours, its knots, the slightest accidents of its veins, I draw a work inspired by nature itself..." Alexandre Noll
