KACHINA SHALAKO MANA / The Giant Bird Girl, Hopi (Zuni influ - Lot 13
KACHINA SHALAKO MANA / The Giant Bird Girl, Hopi (Zuni influence), Arizona, U.S.A. Late 19th to early 20th century. Wood, natural pigments, feathers, nails, leather, cord, animal glue. This remarkable Kachina is crowned with a tabletta (stairway of the sky) representing the important Zuni festivity of the Giant Birds (Shalako). This ornament probably reflects the influence of this people, to whom the Hopi took refuge during the droughts and epidemics of 1853-1854, 1864 and 1867 (Sources: Elisabeth Laniel-Le François). The "tabletta" is very elaborate, consisting of 6 pieces of wood cut into tiers and painted, joined together by leather ties. The colors are delicate, featuring red, yellow and blue. Trapezoidal eyes stand out against the white mask. The black headdress is set off by a visor (attached) on the forehead. The cheeks are adorned with red circles and the mouth takes the form of a rainbow. The Kachina is sculpted nude, with the female sex visible, symbolizing fertility. The arms are removable, a sign of the Zuni's cultural proximity. The body is adorned with three vertical red stripes standing out against a white background. This Kachina takes part in the Shalako ceremony. Height: 35 cm Natural wear to the pigments, one leather fastener incomplete. Provenance: Former Odet collection.
