LÉONARD Agathon (1841-1923). "Danseuse aux Cothurnes", circa 1905. Sculpture with golden patina. Casting stamped "Susse Frères Éditeurs Paris". Engraved on the back is the foundry reference letter M. Signed A Léonard sclp. Height: 36.5 cm History: In 1897, at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, Alexandre Sandier (1843-1916), the new director of the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, noticed at the exhibition the models of a decorative project intended to adorn a dance foyer. Agathon Léonard was then asked to adapt these dancer figures to a project for a porcelain cookie set. The ensemble comprises fifteen statuettes, eleven dancers, two musicians and two torchbearers. The set was exhibited at the 1900 Exposition Universelle, where it received critical and public acclaim and was awarded a gold medal. The following year, six models of the jeu de l'écharpe were produced in bronze by Susse and presented at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux Arts. In 1902, three more dancers were produced.
