STENDHAL, Henri Beyle dit, (1783-1842), écrivain français. - Lot 110
STENDHAL, Henri Beyle dit, (1783-1842), écrivain français. L.A.S. "Lecoeur Ss Lt", to his sister Pauline Beyle. "«B.» [Brunswick], July 10 [1807]. 3 pp. in-4. Address with postal mark "N° 51 Grande-Armée". Tear by breaking of the seal without loss of text, slit in the central fold. Small restoration and pale stain, repeated on both folios. Mitre mark. Fascinating letter from Stendhal addressed to his sister, written the day after the signing of the Treaty of Tilsit. "It is likely, my dear friend, that peace will be made. In this great age that I shall become. Will I remain in Germany with the troops who are likely to remain there for sustenance, will I return to France. At last, will I be employed on the expedition to the great Indies? You forget the people who go so far, otherwise I wouldn't hate a long journey. Of all my dead passions, that of seeing new things is the only one left. I'm very well at B. and I'm often bored there. I certainly wouldn't be bored if I was fighting in Turkey. These are all maybes. Mr. D [aru] will leave me in a corner, to appear docile you will have to stay there. Tell my big daddy that I think the little recommendation for Mr. Delaunay that I slipped in after one of my reports did not make any other sensation, because I am not told about it, he could write a 20 line letter to Martial who would write 2 lines to Z. It is the only way to fix the attention of this man who has so many things in his head. I wanted to have the sweetness of talking to you for a moment before a big dinner ceremony where I cannot miss. It's two hours of boredom. Why don't you write to me, I'm not asking you for reasons, no excuses, just write me what you're thinking, what you're doing that day. Why do you want us to be dead to each other before the fatal end. If I go to Egypt and am killed there you will blame yourself for this cruel silence. Ask for money which I can no longer do without. Lecoeur". Stendhal had joined the Great Arm
