JAPON - Milieu Epoque EDO (1603 - 1868)
Lacquered copper plate, representing R. D'aubert de Vertot (René Aubert de Vertot d'Aubeuf) in gold lacquered hiramaki-e and hedatsu on a black background. (Accidents). On the reverse, a short biography of the character. H. 12.3 cm. According to a portrait published in Jean-François Dreux du Radier, L'Europe illustre, containing a short history of sovereigns, princes, prelates, ministers, great captains... artists and famous ladies in Europe, from the 15th century up to the present, by M. Dreux Du Radier, n°1735, 1755 During the 17th century, the Netherlands established trade links with Japan. The V.O.C. (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, Compagnie des Indes Orientales), the trading arm of the Dutch government, set up its trading post in the Arita region and was then forced to establish itself on the small island of Dejima in Nagasaki. The V.O.C. was interested in the lacquerware trade as soon as it arrived in the archipelago. It is a luxury product, intended for the class of the rich Dutch merchants. The technique used is Japanese, but more often than not, the objects are adapted to European life and sometimes made to measure. Around 1780, there was a sudden taste for black lacquered copper medallions, decorated in hiramaki-e gold lacquer with portraits embellished with the name of the person depicted in capital letters along the upper rim. There are different series. Ours comes from a book written between 1755 and 1765 by Dreux du Radier, entitled L'Europe illustre, which lists the illustrious characters of the author's time. A short biography tells the life of the character, represented by an engraving. An abridged version of this biography can be found on the back of the medallion, in French. On ours, it reads "R. D'Aurert de Vertot" and on the reverse side "De l'acad. des belles lettres, born in the castle of Bennetot, in the payx of Caux on 25 Novemb. 1655. Died in Paris on June 15, 1735".
