Ecole FRANÇAISE ou ITALIENNE, début XIXe siècle
Portrait of a magistrate Oil on canvas (faded) 98 x 73 cm The man posing next to his dog holds a bill that reads: "To Mr. François Pallavicini de Larins (?), judge at the Tribunal de Gde instance Dept des Apennins Sarzane". The Apennines were a former French department, located in present-day Italy, created on June 4, 1805, then under Napoleonic rule. This justifies the presence of the Napoleonic code in the foreground of the console. Sarzane was one of the chief towns of the Apennines but also one of the cradles of the Bonaparte family.
