Dress and its turban in linen embroidered... - Lot 120 - Tessier & Sarrou et Associés
Dress and its turban in linen embroidered with polychrome silk and lace trim with old gold metal cannetille and silk threads. Gathered bodice, long leg sleeves with jockeys and buttoned buttoned cuffs. Gathered skirt at the bottom embroidered with fine bunches of flowers. One-piece rectangular turban embroidered with a flower garland in an arc of a circle. A belt in olive-green silk taffeta is attached to it. 1830-1832 Very good condition (small old ravaudages) Iconography: "La Mode", 31 March 1832 The dandy "A dandy is a man who dresses, a man whose activity, mission and existence consist in the way he dresses" Thomas Carlyle, Sartor Resartus, 1831 The waistcoat is the indispensable accessory for any self-respecting dandy. It is the result of the changes in the French-style dress of the 18th century. In the Romantic period, it had a shawl collar which it kept until the end of the period. While the fashion is for black clothing, the coloured waistcoat becomes a manifesto for the Dandy. During the day, it could be in white piqué, in the evening rather in satin. But it can also have much more original colours. The bright green of our waistcoat is the proof. Some go even further by superimposing them. The last vest presented here shows an adaptation of this fashion, it has a fake buttoned collar under the main vest, for a guaranteed double-necked effect. Day or night, the man cannot afford to go out without his top hat. Appearing as early as 1810, it became the symbol of the social condition of its owner. At first very high and cylindrical, the crown gradually tightens at the base, sometimes even taking on a truncated cone shape. From the 1840s onwards, it will gradually lose height. Most often in taupe, more rarely in straw or even velvet.
