The Jewels. Fantasy by Gavarni. Text by Méry. Mineralogy of the ladies by Cte Foelix. - Les Parures. Fantasy by Gavarni. Text by Méry. History of fashion by Foelix. Paris: G. de Gonet, Martinon, Mrs. widow Louis Janet; Leipzig: Charles Twietmeyer, (1850). 2 volumes in-8, frontispiece, (2 ff.), 316 pp., 16 plates; frontispiece, (2 ff.), 300 pp., 15 plates. Night-blue herringbone percalines, plates and spines decorated with special gilt and polychrome plates, gilt edges. First edition of these beautiful works illustrated with a total of two identical frontispieces and 31 plates engraved on copper by Geoffroy after Gavarni, in the first edition. Known under the general title of Perles et parures, these two books bring together thirty "fantasies" composed around women's fashion accessories, 16 for Les Joyaux and 14 for Les Parures, by Joseph Méry. Each text is accompanied by a very beautiful engraved plate after Gavarni showing women in situation with their finery. Together, these engravings form a true and admirable series of fashion illustrations. Each volume ends with a text by Count Foelix, one concerning the Mineralogy of Ladies, the other the History of Fashion. ONE OF THE EXAMPLES WITH THE COLOURED FLOORS OF THE EARLIER PERIOD AND PRINTED ON PLAIN PAPER, WITH THE MARGINS CUT INTO LACE AND MOUNTED ON PINK PAPER. - According to Carteret (III, p. 461): "The meeting of the two works with the engravings with margins of lace is rather rare to meet".
