George Petrovitch BAKHMETEFF (1847-1928)
Born into a wealthy Tartar family who had served for generations as ambassadors to the Tsar, George Petrovich Bakhmeteff studied at Oxford before marrying Mary Beale, an American daughter of a naval officer, in 1877. He was appointed Imperial Russian Ambassador to Japan from 1905 to 1908 and then to Washington from 1911 to 1917, the last position he held. Following the Russian Revolution, he took refuge with his wife in Paris where he died in 1928. He was awarded several military medals throughout his life: First Class of the Order of Saint Anna, First Class of the Order of Saint Vladimir and Knight of the Third Class of the Order of Saint Vladimir.
