Robert de Semallé obtained the rank of secretary and a position as secretary of an embassy in charge of business in China after a competitive examination. He was in Beijing from 1880 to 1884, as shown by the photos taken or collected by him. He wrote a book entitled "Four Years in Beijing", in which he recounted his missions in southern China, including numerous incursions into Tonkin during insurrections. The collection of objects he brought back following his mission was transmitted by marriage by the grandmother of the current descendants, Adrienne de Semallé (1892-1976).
