▲ Lanting Xiuxi Tu Réunion at the Orchid Pavilion Polychrome Ink on Silk Wears Sun Hu's signature at the bottom right (Fragment, small accidents) Dim. View: 54 x 117 cm Framed under glass Provenance: Galerie Gérard Lévy, Paris This subject is based on events that occurred during an outing on the occasion of the Spring Festival in 353 when Wang Xizhi, great scholar of the Southern Dynasties, and about forty of his friends were gathered at the Pavillon des Orchidées in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. They began a drinking contest: cups of wine placed on lotus leaves floated along a river where Wang Xizhi and his friends were sitting. When a leaf stopped in front of one of them, he had to drink the cup and write a poem. This event inspired a large number of poets and calligraphers for centuries.
