Stephan KESSLER (Donauworth 1622 - Bressanone 1700) - Lot 78
Stephan KESSLER (Donauworth 1622 - Bressanone 1700) The looting of the city of Troy or Allegory of the siege of Vienna, in 1683 Canvas 164 x 290 cm Provenance: Anonymous sale, Vienna, Kinsky Kunst Auktionene, 13 October 2009, No. 47, reproduces Stephan Kessler is considered one of the greatest baroque painters of Tyrol. In 1643, he moved to Brixen, where he obtained citizenship the following year. Specialized in religious painting, he quickly became a sought-after painter in ecclesiastical and aristocratic circles, and his fame extended as far as Vienna. His three sons will work in his workshop. Our painting is probably an allegorical scene drawing a parallel between the siege of Troy and the siege of Vienna by the Ottomans in 1683. The central characters fleeing the burning city are Emperor Leopold I and Claude Félicité of Austria.
