A WHITE embroidery INSIGHT NAPP, with hunting theme, animals - Lot 236
A WHITE embroidery INSIGHT NAPP, with hunting theme, animals, fruits and flowers, circa 1850
Probably made for the Grandes Chasses given in an Imperial or princely residence, or for an embassy or embassy gift.
This masterpiece was used for pomp and circumstance, to show off one's status by the wealth and prowess of the work. It was not utilitarian.
The decor: the staging is masterful and elaborate. Some motifs are placed with a direction of reading up / down (cherries), which confirms the use in monstrance.
In the center: crown of roses, iris, volubilis, primroses, ears of wheat, acorns of oak. On either side, two motifs with bouquets of cherries, hydrangea, lilac, snowballs, peony, dahlia, ferns.
The field: with strawberry plants in bloom and in fruit.
The counter border: the cartouches contain wonderfully embroidered animals: wild boar chased by a hound, deer, woodcock, pheasant hen, carp and eel on a hook, lobster.
Hanging crowns of roses and forget-me-nots, as well as garlands of anemones. Large bouquets of tulips, roses, peonies, elderberries in fruit and leaves. Fruits are arranged: pineapples, apples, pears, strawberries, currants, grapes, cherries, plums.
The border: delimited by a sinuous ribbon decorated with fashions of Alençon type, interlaced with a branch of vine with pampers and leaves, small flowers of fields and blackberries.
White Embroideries: They are executed with the needle, with the plumetis, with stitches of bourdon, festoon and næud. Linen. The thinness of the work indicates the date of manufacture in the middle of the 19th century.
The tablecloth having been embroidered by several workers of very high level and the set not showing differences in execution, this work is that of a very large workshop.
The fabric: Linen, batiste, counts 15 (number of threads per square inch). Three strips of 8
