Émile JOURDAN (1860-1931)
Les ramasseurs de Goémon - Brigneau, 1910 Oil on canvas (lined). Signed and dated lower left. 80 x 100 cm (restorations). Provenance: Former collection of the painter Fernand Joubert. Former collection of M. Henriquet. Acquired on March 7, 1996 at the Galerie Matignon 32, Paris 8ème. Jourdan followed the teachings of Bouguereau and Robert Fleury but moved away from them, preferring to these academics the courses of the Julian Academy, which were freer (men and women painted models together from nature) and more rebellious to official art. In 1888, he met Gauguin at the Auberge Gloanec, a decisive meeting that made him adopt the Group Aesthetics explored by Moret, Laval, Sérusier, Bernard, Chamaillard... . The erasure of the official teaching will take time and Jourdan will fully assimilate the synthetic lesson of Gauguin only after the latter's departure for Tahiti in 1891.
