Paul SERUSIER (1864-1927)
Apples with a striped background - 1912 Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. 40.5 x 56.5 cm. Provenance: Retrospective Galerie Mulhouse, 36 rue Vaneau, Paris (date not specified on the label). Exhibition: Musée de Pont-Aven, 1991, "Paul Sérusier et la Bretagne", reproduced under n° 57. A certificate of authenticity from the Galerie Pierre Peche, Quimper, dated January 6, 1981 will be given to the buyer. In 1907, Sérusier wrote to Maurice Denis: "I have just come out of an exhibition at Bernheim's, where there are only still lifes, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Renoir, Gauguin, Vuillard, Bonnard, Roussel, etc. It seems that one cannot go any further in this genre...". In 1910, as if in defiance, the artist embarked on a series of still lifes in which the influence of Cézanne could be guessed. In this production, uneven in quality, our painting seems to be one of the most successful (see Boutaric Sale, Drouot, 06/07/84, lot 151 p. 44).
