The preparatory watercolor dated June 1, 1885 is reproduced in the V. Hefting under the number 794. Jongkind went to the Dauphiné because the son of Mrs. Fesser, his guardian angel, lived forty kilometers from Grenoble, near La Tour-du-Pin. The landscape suited the painter perfectly. The country was not very hilly, with vast horizons, numerous woods, and small water spots like the Bourbre. He constantly needed new regions, skies over the countryside or reflected in the water of rivers and lakes, he needed skies and the sea. Source: Hefting.
