BARBEDIENNE - Lot 281
BARBEDIENNE Limousin enamel cup with grisaille and gold decoration on a black background. The decoration of the interior of the cup represents the birth of Venus. The outside is decorated with scrolls and cartridges decorated with masks of grotesques. It rests on a foot decorated with the chariot of Neptune. Signed "Maison Barbedienne Paris 1863". Renaissance style, second half of the 19th century. The House Barbedienne is created by Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892). In 1847, it established a foundry in Paris producing bronze sculptures and various decorative pieces such as candlesticks and fireplace accessories. Barbedienne participated in various World Fairs. In 1850 the company also worked for the Hôtel de Ville and made bronze candelabras for Emperor Napoleon III. From 1860 to the 1890s, Barbedienne experimented with new techniques in the field of cloisonné enamel and champlevé enamel. Here is what we can read in the bulletin "Le Joaillier" in 1874 about the Exhibition of industrial products: "It is Mr. Barbedienne who exhibits the greatest number and also the greatest variety of enamels. The Limousin style is represented at M. Barbedienne by two important personalities in the arts, Mr. Popelin and Alfred Serre."
