PROVENANT DES ANCIENNES COLLECTIONS ROTHSCHILD D'après Jean- - Lot 247
PROVENANT DES ANCIENNES COLLECTIONS ROTHSCHILD D'après Jean-Démosthène DUGOURC PAIR OF CANDELABRES in chased and gilded bronze with five arms of light. Composed of an openwork shaft with four female terms supporting a drum with twisted channels, fauna masks and rosettes. Decorated with garlands of flowers, laurels and acanthus leaves. Base with channels, frieze of posts and rosettes. The arms with leafy scrolls, Greek and vine leaves escape from a bouquet of acanthus leaves. They are finished by binnacles lined with water leaves and garlands of flowers. The central shaft is topped by a binet topped by a bouquet. White marble bases. The number 3091 R. is engraved in red on the side of one of the marble bases. 19th century. H. 68 cm - D. 33 cm. (one marble base has been redone, the two central binnacles and their bouquets are reported). Provenance: Palais abbatial de Royaumont. The creation of this model can be attributed to the ornamentalist Jean Démosthène Dugourc after a drawing kept in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs representing identical candleholders on a console. Several examples of this type of candlesticks are known. A pair was part of the Karl Lagerfeld collection, others are kept in the Wallace Collection in London and in the Dodge Collection in Detroit. The first mention of this model appears in 1783 in an invoice from François Rémond to the merchant-mercier Dominique Daguerre "For melting, way and gilding mat of a pair of large torches has 4. figures, and has garlands and flower, 1050 pounds ...", then again in 1786 "For supply of a pair of large torches has four cariathide gilded mat 888 pounds. The bronzier Rémond seems to have made these candlesticks at the request of the merchant-merchant Daguerre, probably owner of the model. It is most likely that he supplied the Marquis de Vaudreuil with a pair of candelabras similar (with variations) to the model we are presenting. They are described in the sale of his collection in 1787: n° 377. Two candlesticks with girandoles with five bobêches
