Rare pair of tapestries with decoration said aristoloches. L - Lot 175
Rare pair of tapestries with decoration said aristoloches. Lush greenery with palm tree, cabbage leaves, trees, shrubs and plants animated with two ostriches, a snake, hares, a deer, a peacock, a squirrel, three birds and three dogs for the first one, the other one with an ostrich, three squirrels, a bear devouring a fish, a lynx, a pheasant and another bird for the other; cities and wooded hills in the background; borders furnished with vases, leaves, fruits, flowers, animals and birds. Workshops of the Marche, second half of the 16th century. H. 293 cm - L. 292 cm (some restorations of use and re-stripping) We find since 1530/40, the mentions of "carpets of foliage", "verdures of Auvergne" in the old inventories. They refer to these tapestries from the region called "aristoloche" leaves, "crisp leaves" or "cabbage leaves". Like the previous Millefleurs, these greens are populated with many real or imaginary animals with a taste for the exotic as shown here by the presence of ostriches and a palm tree. Their highly decorative quality was appreciated until the beginning of the 17th century: covering the perimeter of the walls of a room, they formed a "green room" and thus created a soothing and entertaining atmosphere through their fantasy.
