Edouard MANET (Paris 1832- 1883)
Isabelle-Hélène held in edge, after Rubens Black pencil. 15,5 x 12,3 cm. Traces of glue in the corners, some spotting. Provenance: Former Eugène Blot collection (inscription on verso). Former Dubaut collection (stamp on the back of the drawing). Exhibition: "L'Enfance", Paris, galerie Charpentier, 1949. Bibliography: J. Mathey, "Graphisme de Manet", ed de Nobele, Paris, 1961, n°30, repr. This is a study after the portrait of Rubens' daughter, a drawing with three pencils kept in the Louvre (Inv. 20.197). Manet may have seen this drawing during one of his visits to the Louvre's drawing room, or may have sketched it from a reproduction. The inscription on the reverse of the frame indicates that it is a sheet from a sketchbook. Eugène Blot, dealer and collector (he was the dealer and founder of Camille Claudel) actually owned a set of sketches by Manet. cf: Blot sale, May 10, 1906 or June 1933
