ANCIENT REGIME / LOUIS XIII / PROVENCE / AIX-EN-PROVENCE / WHEAT TRADE / FOOD SHORTAGE & PROTECTION OF THE PEOPLE. Excerpt from the Parliamentary Registers. Issued in Aix on August 14, 1636. Folio-sized proclamation (36 x 26 cm). Ruling by the Parliament of Provence (Chamber of Vacations) regulating the sale and trade of wheat during periods of food shortage. Absolute priority is given to the “common people living from hand to mouth” in the markets of Aix and the surrounding region. Prohibition on purchasing outside the markets, strict controls at the Porte Saint-Jean in Aix, and severe measures against hoarding and monopolies by the “Dardanaires” (speculators). Signed Estienne. Coat-of-arms vignette bearing the arms of France and a historicized initial. Handwritten notes in pencil; a small tear in the right margin repaired with yellowed adhesive tape (no loss of text); slight losses at the edges; water stains.
