FRENCH CAMPAIGN (1814) / PROPAGANDA / POITIERS / OFFICIAL NE - Lot 19
FRENCH CAMPAIGN (1814) / PROPAGANDA / POITIERS / OFFICIAL NEWS Poster measuring 38 x 25 cm. Contains an excerpt from a letter addressed to the Prefect by the Minister of State on April 1, 1814. Followed by the publication order issued by the Prefect of Vienne, MALLARMÉ [François-René Auguste Mallarmé, Prefect of Vienne]. Done at Poitiers, April 3, 1814. Printed by FR.-AIMÉ BARBIER, Printer to the Prefecture. — 1814. A crucial imperial propaganda document printed in the final days of the French Campaign. With Paris having just surrendered to the Allies on March 31, 1814, this poster desperately attempts to reassure the population by spreading news of military victories (successes by Generals Piré and Milhaud, the capture of Austrian and Swedish diplomats, and the fierce resistance of the inhabitants). Period creases, tiny foxing spots, small missing sections along the edges that do not affect the text.
