SECOND RESTORATION / RUMORS / NAPOLEON / BEAUVAIS. Residents - Lot 18
SECOND RESTORATION / RUMORS / NAPOLEON / BEAUVAIS. Residents of the Department of Oise! Sinister rumors and alarming news are circulating... Poster measuring 44 x 32 cm. Signed LE COMTE DE TOCQUEVILLE [Édouard de Tocqueville, prefect of the Oise]. In Beauvais, from the DESJARDINS Printing House, January 25, 1816. A remarkable document printed during the Second Restoration aimed at debunking the rumors and “fake news” of the time. Prefect Tocqueville denounces the rumors spread by supporters of the deposed Emperor, asserting in particular that “Bonaparte has landed in Gibraltar, Corsica, or Bordeaux with 80,000 Negroes.” Handwritten notes in pencil; period creases; foxing; minor damage to the margins that does not affect the text.
