Ottoman ewer - Lot 100
Ottoman ewer Tombak (copper gilded with mercury) Turkey, circa 1800, Ottoman Empire H. 35.5 cm The pear-shaped body of this ewer features twisted gadroons in relief, every other one of which is engraved with plant motifs. On the base and the upper part of the body, framing the band of gadroons, is an engraved design of large, sinuous leaves. On the lid, the design of raised gadroons alternating with engraved plant motifs is repeated. It is topped by a knob in the shape of a flower bud and raised petals. The sinuous handle is also twisted. The underside of the foot is decorated with a flower. This ewer is typical of Ottoman productions inspired by the European Baroque style. (Gilded at a later date)
