Cast Brass
Probably from India for the Malaysian or Indonesian market, 17th–18th century
H. 21.5 cm
This Indian-style kendi water pitcher, made of bronze, features a simple decoration of double lines around the body and flared neck. The spout is also flared, forming a wide disc. This type of vessel, with equivalents found in India, Indonesia, and Malaysia, featured a round body without a handle, a straight neck, and a spout. Held aloft, they allowed water to be poured directly into the mouth.
