Panel of 40 Damascus tiles - Lot 90
Panel of 40 Damascus tiles Siliceous paste with underglaze decoration painted in cobalt, turquoise, green, eggplant, white, and black Levant, Damascus, 20th century Dimensions: approx. 98 x 156 x 1.7 cm This complete panel of 40 tiles features a large central register depicting three vases, alternating with two cypress trees. The large central vase is adorned with half-palmetto motifs on a background of scale patterns, while the two vases flanking it are decorated with cintamani motifs. A rich decoration of bouquets and flowering shrubs stands out against the cobalt blue background. Turquoise borders and a frieze of flowers on a green background frame the central scene. A 17th-century panel with a similar design—which likely inspired our panel—is housed at the Ashmolean Museum (no. EA1977.15).
