LOUŸS, Pierre: Aphrodite. Mœurs antiques. Fasquelle, Paris, - Lot 257
LOUŸS, Pierre: Aphrodite. Mœurs antiques. Fasquelle, Paris, 1928. New edition, one of the copies on pure-thread paper. In-8 binding in burgundy Bakelite signed Jotau, metal title label on spine, original publisher’s cover preserved, gilt head (Jotau). In perfect condition. Jotau (Joseph Taupin) was the first bookbinder to operate on an industrial scale; his work was the result of the typical “avant-garde” techniques of the 1920s. Hinged Bakelite bindings, from the early 1920s through the mid-1930s, represent one of the first attempts to revitalize the aesthetics of everyday bookbinding. Jean de Gonet’s semi-industrial RIM bindings follow in the tradition of these Jotau bindings. The Art Deco frieze is missing.
