POTAGE Michel (1949-2020) Journey and dreams / Silkscreen in - Lot 291
POTAGE Michel (1949-2020) Journey and dreams / Silkscreen in color on paper / Artist's proof numbered I on XXV lower left / Signed lower right / 56 x 75.3 cm Michel Potage was born on June 11, 1949. After several experiences in the theater, as a director, and in music, he began to paint "in spite of himself. He gradually came to prefer painting to other art forms, because of its solitary nature, seeing it as a "confrontation with the impossible". In 1978, he decided to travel to Australia to "paint the dream" of the Aborigines. Following this first initiatory journey, he painted several series of pictures on themes ranging from the letters Vincent Van Gogh and his brother wrote to each other, to still lifes. Michel Potage's work is largely characterized by series devoted to different peoples. He first turned his attention to the Australian Aborigines (1979), then to Gypsies in 1988, and finally to the Inuit of Canada's far north in 1989. His work is similar to that of British painter Francis Bacon, whose influence he claims.
