LALIQUE René (1860-1945) "Le Jour et la Nuit", 1926 - Lot 62
LALIQUE René (1860-1945) "Le Jour et la Nuit", 1926 Rare pressed blue molded glass clock. Black patinated metal base. Movement: Société Anonyme des Établissements Léon Hatot. Frabricants Paris. Numbered: 46295. Signed R.Lalique on reverse. Size: 37.8 x 31.8 x 9.8 cm History: In this work, René Lalique explores the cosmic mythology of Day and Night, which are never supposed to meet, since they succeed one another. In this neoclassical-inspired composition, the artist manages to bring them together, without tying them together; they just brush against each other, and if Day (the man) looks towards Night (the woman), she can't see him, her arm folded over her face trying to hide her luminosity. René Lalique put all his mastery and knowledge of glass to work in this piece, playing with the technique of hollow molding and frosting for the Day, which alters the density of the color blue, and conversely, for the female figure, he uses the bas-relief technique, which intensifies the density of the blue, turning it into midnight blue. From the same mass of blue-colored glass, René Lalique creates three different shades of blue: dark blue, sapphire blue and bluish white. "Le Jour et la Nuit" has always been considered one of René Lalique's major works, and when it was created in 1926, it was the most expensive piece in the Maison Lalique catalog. Lalique catalogue, costing as much as 3,500 francs at the time. By way of comparison, 3500 francs in 1926 is equivalent to €280,000 in 2026. Bibliography : - Morrison McClinton.
