MAJORELLE Louis (1854-1926) - Lot 35
MAJORELLE Louis (1854-1926) DAUM, Nancy Exceptional and rare ormolu sconce with a naturalistic Sagittarius design and two arms of light with a bulb cover in molded, blown dichroic multi-layer glass, very finely chased with a wheel. Signatures engraved in intaglio on the wheel. Circa 1903-1904. Size: 43 x 26 x 26 cm One example is in the Musée d'Orsay collection under number OAO 512, acquired in 1980. Bibliography: "In 1890, Majorelle set up a workshop devoted exclusively to the production of bronze, copper and wrought-iron elements for the ornamentation of his furniture. Then, from 1898 onwards, metalwork became the focus of numerous investigations that contributed to the development of the Majorelle style. It's not surprising, then, that in the Daum-Majorelle collaboration that took shape in 1903, Majorelle himself was the key element. It was he who provided the design for the wrought-iron and bronze bases, and who chose the shapes, decorations and sizes of the various types of lighting. Musée d'Orsay notice. Lacambre Geneviève. Thiébaut Philippe. "Catalog sommaire illustré des nouvelles acquisitions du Musée d'Orsay 1980-1983. Éditions de la Réunion des Musées Nationaux 1983, page 124, reproduced page 125, N° 527. Similar model. Bascou Marc. Massé Marie-Madeleine. Thiébaut Philippe. "Musée d'Orsay, illustrated summary catalog of the Decorative Arts. Paris, France. Réunion des Musées Nationaux 1988, p170.
