KACHINA YUNG'A/KACHINA-CACTUS, Hopi, Arizona, U.S.A. Circa 1 - Lot 16
KACHINA YUNG'A/KACHINA-CACTUS, Hopi, Arizona, U.S.A. Circa 1910-1920. Wood, natural pigments, string, cactus thorns, animal glue. This Kachina is crowned with arched cactus branches, artistically represented and fitted with real cactus spines. The forehead is adorned with feathers. Red ears frame a white mask adorned with stars. Round eyes, hemmed in black and equipped with a pupil, make this deity very present. The mouth takes the form of a frieze of triangular teeth. The white breastplate is decorated with stars or crosses. Yung'a wears a red shirt and a traditional white kilt with a liturgical scarf with traditional motifs on the right side. His semi-circular feet are shod with green ankle boots. He supervised the cleaning of springs on the Third Mesa. Height: 32 cm (The end of the right foot is missing, some wear and missing thorns). Provenance: Former Odet collection. Bibliography: Laniel-Le François, Kachina des indiens Hopi, Ed.Amez, Saint-Vit, 1992, Page 350. Related piece: see a very similar model in the Horst Antes collection, R.F.A.
