Katsina Shalako (Antes 112). Zuñi, New Mexico, U.S.A. Circa - Lot 12
Katsina Shalako (Antes 112). Zuñi, New Mexico, U.S.A. Circa 1880-1890. This beautiful and intriguing Shalako doll radiates from her feather-like solar headdress. Her head is adorned with a plait of horsehair, embellished with feathers at the back. Her mask has a beautiful patina and her eyes are made of fabric buttons. The ingenious fastening system extends to the horns and around the head. Its black tubular nose "points" mischievously through its feather collar. A heavy, baroque necklace of cylindrical red pearls richly adorns Shalako's chest. Her entire body is elegantly clothed in a fabric dress and cape featuring highly graphic and colorful patterns. Wood, pigments, fabric, tubular beads, feathers, fibers, cardboard, horsehair. Height: 30 cm. Very good condition for such a rare and ancient piece. Minor chips on the headpiece. Very fine natural wear patina. Shalako is a sacred name given to the Six Koko (Kachina) Gods and messengers of the Rain Gods. They are the main gods of the Shalako Winter Ceremony of the Zuñi Indians (New Mexico), during which these six gods are personified. New or refurbished houses blessed by the Shalako gods during this very important ceremony are known as "Shalako houses" (Paul COZE, 1954 and Jean Cazeneuve, 1957 - Matilda Coxe Stevenson, 1905 and Bunzel, 1932). Among the Hopi, this very important God Koko (Kachina) Zuñi, messenger of the Rain Gods, is known as Sio Salako (Colton 158) or Sio Shalako (Wright: 10/D). References: Antes: Shalako, 112 (p. 76).
