PALHIK MANA mask / Young butterfly girl drinking water. Hopi - Lot 10
PALHIK MANA mask / Young butterfly girl drinking water. Hopi, Arizona. Magnificent leather hood mask, the surface covered with pigmented coatings. The helmet completely covers the dancer's head, with three holes for the eyes and mouth, and is topped by a Tableta made of 15 wooden elements attached with fiber ties. Natural pigments in green, red, blue and white. The Tableta represents the stairway to heaven, i.e. the rain-bringing clouds. First quarter of the 20th century. 57 x 73 cm On black metal base. PALHIK MANA (and the Shalako Mana that resemble them) appear when drought strikes the territory, on the first day of the NIMAN ceremony. The signs on the mask and the dancer's clothing are symbolic of a language intended for initiates, the geometric symbols expressing the sacred and the link between man and "unknown existence", man no longer really being man but representing Spirit. Provenance: - Former private collection, Los Angeles, California in the 1940s. - Ronald MESSIK, Santa Fe, New Mexico. - Kevin CONRU Gallery, exhibited at "Parcours des mondes, Paris 2005" (exhibition of 21 Hopi masks, collected over the past 20 years). - Private collection, Paris, 2005. - Rossini sale 04/06/2009 n°252
