CHINA - 19th century - Lot 137
CHINA - 19th century Celadon jade (nephrite) group of fallow deer and their young lying one against the other, holding lingzhi branches in their mouths, their coats represented by stars, the fallow deer's back forming a brush. L. 12.5 cm Wooden base with openwork foliage. Provenance: French private collection, acquired before 1958 The fallow deer is a symbol of longevity, with its ability to live a very long time. It is also the only animal reputed to be able to find the lingzhi, the sacred mushroom of immortality, and is therefore frequently depicted holding it in its mouth. Deer in Chinese is pronounced "lu", making a pun on "lu" meaning "emolument" or "official salary". In this way, the buck symbolizes the wealth associated with official position. Two associated bucks may refer to the auspicious phrase "Lulu shunli", "May all roads be smooth".
