Liao Chi-Chun, born in 1902 in Fengyuan (Taichung), studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts under Tanabe Itaru. Returning to Taiwan in 1927, he taught art in Tainan and played an active role in the local art scene. From the late 1920s, his works were regularly selected for various exhibitions, including the First Taiwan Art Exhibition (Taiten), the Imperial Art Exhibition (Teiten) and the Ministry of Education Art Exhibition (Shin Bunten). An influential member of several associations, including the Chih-Yang Western Painting Society, Chidao Association and Tai-Yang Art Society, he also served as a juror at major exhibitions before teaching at the Taiwan Provincial Normal College from 1947. A painter of landscapes and still lifes, he evolved in the 1950s/60s towards a vivid palette and simplified forms. Invited to travel in Europe and the United States in 1962, he then embraced abstraction, developing a colorful, free style.
