Workshop of Jean-Marc NATTIER (Paris 1685-1766 Paris) * Study for a Portrait of a Woman as a River Goddess Oil on panel, label on back, with handwritten annotation, early 20th century: "je lègue au comte d'Andigné l'esquisse par Nattier d'une fille de Louis XV. testament de monsieur Georges Cain". On the back, handwritten annotations dating from the early 20th century: Esquisse de Mme Adelaide, by Nattier, bequeathed by Georges Cain. 18.5 x 24 cm We thank Mr. Olafur Thorvaldsson for kindly pointing out the stylistic proximity between the pose of our sketch and two paintings: the first, known as the "presumed portrait of Marie-Elisabeth de Rouvray Saint-Simon" (1739, 81 x 64 cm, sale of the collection of Mme D[arland], Me Baudouin, Hôtel Drouot, May 20, 1910, lot 1, present location unknown); the second as "Mlle. Henault, Comtesse d'Aubeterre" (1727, oil on canvas, 146.8 x 114 cm., Buenos Aires, Museo de Los Bellas Artes, inv. 8511). Provenance : - Georges Cain (1853-1919), painter, writer, curator of the Musée Carnavalet,- bequeathed by the latter to Fortuné, comte d'Andigné (1866-1935) - then by descent to the present day.
