Attracted to art and drawing from an early age, Keith Haring entered Pittsburgh's Ivy School of Professional Art at the age of 18. Bored with advertising design, he left the school at the end of his first year and enrolled at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Immersed in the intellectual and artistic ferment of New York in the 1980s, Keith Haring began to use the city as a medium for his creativity. Inspired by the graffiti that covered the city's walls, he chose unused billboards in the corridors of the New York subway to create his drawings, making them visible to the greatest number of people. Keith Haring quickly gained recognition in the pop art world, and his first exhibitions met with great success.
