JAPAN, KYO-SUKASHI - MOMOYAMA period (1573 - 1603) / Early E - Lot 186
JAPAN, KYO-SUKASHI - MOMOYAMA period (1573 - 1603) / Early EDO period (1603 - 1868) Openwork iron maru gata in yo-sukashi of the so-called yatsuhashi motif, flight of wild geese over bridges and irises. Unsigned. Diam. 7.6 cm NBTHK certificate n°4016666 Yatsuhashi are staggered or sloping wooden bridges, often found in Japanese gardens. The theme is taken from the 10th-century tale Ise Monogatari: exiled from Kyoto after an affair with a high-ranking court lady, the story's protagonist stops at Yatsuhashi, a place where a stream divides into eight canals, each with its own bridge. The sight of irises inspires him to compose a nostalgic love poem.
