JAPAN, SHONAI SCHOOL - EDO period (1603 - 1868), 19th century Chased iron maru gata in hira bori and inlaid in gold hira zogan with a torii with garlands on one side and a barrier on the reverse on a hammered tsuchimeji background. Unsigned. This torii is said to symbolize the Nonomiya shrine in Kyoto, where, in Heian times, the imperial princesses chosen to represent the family at the Ise shrine spent a year purifying themselves.
