AUZOLLE Marcellin. - Lot 576
AUZOLLE Marcellin. Auto Barré Niort. Circa 1903. Lithographic poster. Imp. Th. Dupuy & Fils, Paris. Folded in cloth, very good condition: one very skilfully restored tear in the lower part of the poster (20 cm), restored tears in the yellowed margins, a few small freckles, bright, fresh colors. 120 x 161 cm Bibliography: Rupert Prior. Motoring The Golden Years. Morgan Samuel Editions 1991. Page 12 (variant). "The two women have just passed a line of other automobiles, and one of them can't help bragging about the superiority of her vehicle with a cheeky and surprising thumbing of the nose. The poster not only suggests that women should start driving, but also shows how the freedom of the road can lead them to break through some of the shackles of propriety of the time. It's hard to say what amazes the assembled villagers more: the women's beauty, their courage or their dilapidated contraptions." (Gold, p. 55) Christophe Zagrodzki. L'Automobile et la Publicité. Musée de la Publicité Paris 1984. Page 59, illus. 22.
