Alice PENALBA (1913-1982) - Lot 60
Alice PENALBA (1913-1982) Counterpoint, (Contrapunto), 1958-1959 Brown patina bronze, signed, numbered 5/6 and stamped Valsuani on the base 36 x 70 x 20 cm Listed, described and reproduced in the archives of Alice Penalba (AAP) in Buenos Aires under N°22 A sculpture must evoke the presence of its creator, while incorporating itself into the surrounding world with a magical force. Sculpture is a difficult art, not only for the creator, but also for the observer: because it is closely linked to life, it demands from the observer an attention free from arbitrary feelings. Hence the unpopularity and inadequacy of modern sculpture. As the relationship between the work and the viewer cannot be established, thanks to the bad taste of the time, the most social of all the arts remains, for the time being, ineffective. Great traditional sculpture - Egyptian, Mexican, Greek - is strongly linked to man, creating legends and a direct source of poetry. Alicia Penalba in Premier Bilan de l'art actuel. Le Soleil Noir, 1953.
