CHARDONNE Jacques : - Lot 33
CHARDONNE Jacques :
Important preparatory manuscript for what was Chardonne's last essay on French publishing.
In the mid-60s, Jacques Chardonne and Jacques Brenner planned to write a history of French publishing. The project was interrupted by Chardonne's death in '68, and Brenner alone took it up, publishing in 1982 his tableau de l a vie littéraire en France d'avant guerre à nos jours. Consisting of 87 in-8 pages, these are preparatory notes and chapters in which the writer paints a highly unorthodox portrait of the great figures who marked the revival of the profession, while pointing out a thousand revealing details of the evolution of literary mores. His unmistakable style alternates lengthy developments with scathing assertions. Enclosed is a 3-page letter from Brenner containing reading notes and remarks on Chardonne's manuscript.
Chardonne's manuscript. An unpublished manuscript of real literary and historical value.
