Jean-François CHAMPOLLION (1790-1832). - Lot 32
Jean-François CHAMPOLLION (1790-1832).
Autograph letter to his wife Rosine Blanc "Madame Champollion jeune" in Grenoble (address on back). 1 p. in-8 (a little creased).
[Paris], March 8, 1824. Framed.
Rare, intimate letter on the birth of his daughter Zoraïde, born in Grenoble on March 1, 1824, whom he would not meet for the first time until May 1824. "It was only yesterday, my Rosine, that I learned of the end of your great enterprise, and if I am to believe what is written to me from all sides, the thing has happily come to an end. I need to believe that, and after all you've suffered, it would be only right that the good Lord should give you a gentle convalescence. While I regret not having been with you during your painful crisis, I'm frightened to think what would have happened to my poor head during those thirty deadly hours when I would have been forced to see you suffer without being able to relieve you, however much I wanted to. Let's hope that little Zoraïde, a true little spring flower, as her name suggests, will make up for the pain and suffering you went through bringing her into the world. I'm not telling you about the pleasure I feel when I see the circle of my affections widen and attach me to you with a new bond. I write you only these few words. Farewell.
