* A pair of ormolu sconces decorated with slightly curved an - Lot 550
* A pair of ormolu sconces decorated with slightly curved antique leaves, from which three grained arms of light with acanthus binnacles emerge. The shaft is adorned with a row of piastres, flanked by two flower stems pinched by a ring. The openwork top is decorated with foliage scrolls and a bouquet of flowers. The lower part ends in a ribboned bow. Transitional Louis XV-Louis XVI period H. 52 cm L. 40 cm Arm lights were born of the need to project light ahead of a wall. The term "arm" was used in the 17th and 18th centuries to designate this type of light fixture, which came to be known as a sconce in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Transition style marked the definitive abandonment of rocaille for the more classical Louis XVI style. As witnessed by this pair of sconces whose shapes benefit from a new symmetry, with the branches brought to the same height, and from the abandonment of rocaille sinuosity in favor of omements drawn from antique decorative grammar.
