Virgin and Child in ochre limestone (pierre de Jaumont). Sta - Lot 396
Virgin and Child in ochre limestone (pierre de Jaumont). Standing and slightly swaying, Mary carries her Child on her right arm. She wears a bonnet in the form of a headdress, revealing finely waved locks falling to her shoulders.
Eastern France, Lorraine, Metz region, late 16th century
H. 43.5 cm
(broken head, glued back, missing parts)
This delicately sculpted Virgin, with her particularly fine drapery and elongated fingers in the manner of Du Breucq and other Renaissance sculptors, is a remarkable work. It displays the canons of the second half of the 16th century, and has adopted the fluidity of Italian Renaissance works. Few works have survived from this period, with the exception of the magnificent sculptures by Ligier Richier (1500-1567), which strongly inspired the sculptor of this Virgin. The roundness of the face and the simplicity of the highly curved, wave-like folds are in the vein that the Saint-Mihiel school disseminated after the death of the Lorraine master.
