This type of diamond is extremely rare, representing only 1% of the diamonds mined worldwide. Formed in the depths of the Earth, diamonds are mainly made up of carbon atoms, although elements such as nitrogen and boron can replace some carbon atoms. Type II diamonds are divided into two sub-categories: IIa and IIb. Type IIa diamonds contain neither nitrogen nor boron in measurable quantities (detectable by infrared spectrometry), giving them the classification of "pure diamonds".
