Abel BONNARD:
En Chine.
Notebooks of handwritten notes taken in 1920, during his trip with Paul Painlevé, which resulted in articles for the Revue des deux mondes and his book En Chine published by Fayard in 1923. This set comprises 4 notebooks of 162, then 164, then 164 and finally 52 in-8 pages. It begins with a passage through the United States (New York, then Chicago), then Japan before reaching China; the return journey takes in Macao, Saigon, Singapore, Colombo, Djibouti, and Port Saïd as the point of entry to the Mediterranean. There are two lists of books to be read, one for the journey, the second "to be read before my book", numerous sketches, quotations, many references to Confucius... The majority of the texts are in black ink, and are partly written out, reflecting a structured way of thinking in note-taking, probably titled when the book itself was made in red ink.
Bound in three in-8 volumes, each in full beige cloth, smooth spine, title page on burgundy leather, gold lettering.
