Silver carriage watch by GAUTRIN in Paris for the Turkish ma - Lot 91
Silver carriage watch by GAUTRIN in Paris for the Turkish market. Case with engraved back depicting a winged figure carrying a scythe and pushing a ball, allegory of time rolling over the earth. Flowery interlacing decoration around the rim. White enamel dial with Turkish numerals. Three arming squares for alarm, movement and striking. Two hands with oriental decoration display the hours and minutes, and an iron hand for the alarm. Repeater at will. Cylinder escapement with vertical balance. This point is particularly noteworthy as it is rare to see such a balance wheel arrangement. As this is a carriage watch, and therefore subject to frequent suspension in this position, the balance works on a single pivot, with a minimum of friction. 18th century Diam. 14.5 cm Gross weight: 2,300 g Watch-holder later than the model Bibliography - Charles Allix "Carriage clokcs" suffolk 1974 p15. - Yves Droz et Joseph Florès " montre à une roue " France octobre 1998 reproit p12/13. - Saunier "revue chronométrique" August 1872 for this type of escapement.
