MUCHA Alphonse - Lot 305
MUCHA Alphonse Beer from the Meuse. 1897. Lithographic poster signed in the plate lower left. Imp. F. Champenois. Paris. Uninserted, poor condition: marked median folds, browned, brittle and weakened paper, tears and lacks along folds. Stains, tears, traces of moisture around edges. 155 x 103.5 cm Bibliography: Jack Rennert and Alain Weill. Alphonse Mucha. All the posters and panels. Editions Henri Veyrier Paris 1984. Pages 126 and 127. Ill. 27: "This jovial beer-drinking woman has her long braids of hair unfurled in a wave, adorned with attributes appropriate to beer: barley, hops and also poppies. It's a classic Mucha composition, with the woman, the circular and semi-circular motifs and the hair in exaggerated volutes... Mucha did not himself design the brewery buildings shown in the lower left, nor the allegory of the Meuse, the brand's emblem, which appears on all his posters. They were probably the work of another artist or lithographer". Jiri Mucha. The Grafic Work of Alphonse Mucha. Academy Editions London 1973. Page 54. Ill. 68. Exhibition catalog. Mucha la collection Ivan Lendl. Union des Arts Décoratifs 1988. Page 36. Fig. 27.
