BAVARIAN SCHOOL, probably Nuremberg, circa 1800, entourage of Daniel Chodowiecki (Danzig 1726 - 1801 Berlin)
Illustrations of Poems by Johann Konrad Grübel ("Grubels Gediechte")
Oil on panel, printed label on back, probably early 20th century: "Antiquités-Curiosités / Legay Père / Rue Stanislas 26, Nancy / 12685 - 300 fr".
48 x 61.5 cm
Fascinating, truculent composition of nearly 70 medallions illustrating the poems of Johann Konrad Grübel (1736-1809), Nuremberg's greatest poet. His readers (Goethe in particular) appreciated his sense of satyrdom and the humor with which he tackled his favorite subject: the daily lives of his fellow citizens. Goeth praised his writing as "clear, serene and pure, like a glass of water" ("klar, heiter und rein, wie ein Glas Wasser"). His poems were initially self-published, in the form of pamphlets and magazines, then collected in a first collective edition (from 1798-1812).
His portrait appears in the medallion next to the coat of arms of the city of Nuremberg, in the upper right-hand corner.
